The January window opens in a matter of days and Newcastle are expected to be active as they look to add to Howe’s group.

With a top four challenge a real possibility, many fans feel Newcastle should aggressively target the January window to boost their chances of Champions League football.

It remains to be seen how much cash Newcastle will splash, but Howe is clear that he wants a stronger squad by the end of the transfer period.

He told a press conference when asked what he would like Newcastle to be by the end of the window: “I want us to be stronger, obviously, if we can. Stronger squad than the one we entered the month with.

“What that looks like, I don’t know at this moment in time.”

Newcastle have been linked with a host of players, including Benfica and Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez.

Chelsea though are pushing hard for the midfielder and it has been claimed that Fernandez has already said yes in principle to a move to Stamford Bridge.
