PSV signed the centre-back on loan from Everton last summer and he has been a regular part of the team, making 36 appearances across all competitions.

The Dutch giants do not have an option to buy and Everton are likely to demand a considerable fee if PSV want to sign him on a permanent deal this summer.

But Van der Meyde insisted that there is no reason to consider such a deal as Branthwaite is not good enough to play at the heart of PSV’s defence going forward.

He stressed that PSV must offload him at the end of the season as his football is only suited for English football where he can use his physicality and his lack of ability on the ball can be masked.

The former Everton star said on Veronica Offside: “Branthwaite is PSV’s Calvin Bassey, you have to get rid of him quickly.

“They boy should play football in England, head balls away, not cross the half-way line and not interfere with the game.

“This is just not possible.”

It remains to be seen whether Branthwaite has a future at Everton if he returns to the club this summer.
