The 20-year-old centre-back joined Celtic from Watford in the summer of 2021 and last season he made his debut for the Bhoys first-team in the Scottish Cup.

Celtic sent out Lawal on a season-long loan at Fleetwood Town to ply his trade under former Bhoys star Scott Brown in the summer and since his arrival, the centre-back has sealed a spot in the starting line-up of the League One outfit.

Evans revealed that he wanted to bring young Lawal to Stevenage in the summer transfer window and added that the club tried to have a conversation with the Glasgow giants regarding the player.

The Stevenage boss added that Lawal joined Fleetwood because he knew Brown and looked up to him growing up; Brown has since been replaced by ex-Hibs boss Lee Johnson.

“They got a centre-back in from Celtic”, Evans told Stevenage’s media.

“We tried to have a conversation last summer with Celtic, but he went with Broony [Scott Brown] to Fleetwood.

“He knew Broony and looked up to him and we understood all that stuff.”

Lawal has clocked up 13 appearances for Fleetwood Town in the league while racking up two cautions and he will be determined to impress Brendan Rodgers with his performances this season before he returns to Celtic Park.
