Matip has suffered a big blow by injuring his cruciate ligament, something which means he is looking at many months on the sidelines and will miss the rest of the season.

The defender, who Klopp snapped up on a free transfer from Schalke and has regularly trusted through his time at Anfield, is out of contract at the end of the season.

The jury is out on whether Liverpool will keep the defender and Klopp, who feels it is possible, admits it is not his decision.

Klopp was keen to keep hold of James Milner last term, but the club refused to offer the experienced midfielder a new deal.

Asked at a press conference if Matip could be offered a new deal, Klopp replied: “I would say so.

“But it is not my decision in the end. I cannot sign the papers.”

Matip is due to turn 33 years old at the start of next season and will be working hard to make sure he can recover from his injury as quickly as possible.
