Newcastle United have still not opened formal talks with Manchester City for midfielder Kalvin Phillips, according to journalist Ben Jacobs.

Eddie Howe is keen to make additions during this month’s transfer window to help his depleted squad, but the club are watching their financial commitments closely.

Phillips is a key target for Newcastle and they are keen to capture the fringe Manchester City man on a loan deal.

Juventus are also keen, but Phillips is claimed to prefer to stay in the Premier League, not least with Euro 2024 on the horizon.

However, Newcastle have still not taken the step of opening formal talks with Manchester City to try to find an agreement on Phillips.

Phillips is out of favour at the Etihad and unlikely to play a substantial amount of football if he stays beyond the January transfer window.

Manchester City are suggested to be looking for a sizeable loan fee to move him on however.

And those terms are unpalatable for Newcastle, though they have not taken steps to try to negotiate them down.

The Magpies will be without midfielder Sandro Tonali until next season due to his breaches of betting rules in Italy.
