Mark Wilson has insisted that Celtic will not spend the big bucks on a new goalkeeper after their torrid experience with Vasilis Barkas.

Celtic signed Barkas in 2020 for a considerable fee of £4.5m from AEK Athens where he made a name for himself and even broke into the Greece team.

However, he had a torrid time in Scotland and the goalkeeper was shipped out to FC Utrecht on loan two years later; he was allowed to join them on a free transfer last summer.

Joe Hart’s retirement announcement has meant that Celtic are now looking to shop for a new number one in the next summer transfer window.

However, Wilson believes the Barkas debacle will be very much in their heads this time around and he does not believe Celtic will pay a big fee to bring in a goalkeeper in the summer.

The former Bhoy said on Clyde 1’s Superscoreboard: “I can’t see Celtic paying £5m to £6m on a goalkeeper.

“Not after the Barkas debacle.

“They might change their recruitment team or whoever selects that part or how they did things with that because, for £4.5m, nothing was right with Barkas when he came to the club.

“I just can’t see Celtic paying that amount of money for a goalkeeper.”

It remains to be seen what kind of budget Celtic will allocate to bring in a new number one goalkeeper in the summer.
