West Ham United loaned-out star at Southampton Flynn Downes has declared that he would love to stay with Saints next season.

The Hammers midfielder joined Southampton on a season-long loan last summer and Downes has been an integral part of Russell Martin’s starting line-up on the south coast.

Downes has featured 34 times for the Saints in the league so far and the defensive midfielder has picked up ten cautions in the process.

The West Ham star admitted that he would love to stay with the St Mary’s outfit next season and stated that he is enjoying life under Martin and his staff.

Downes also highlighted that he will get a clear idea of his future when he returns to West Ham after his loan spell; the Hammers are tipped to want to assess him in pre-season.

When asked about whether the West Ham star wants to spend next season with Southampton, Downes told the Daily Echo: “Of course, I would love to stay here next season.

“I love it here. I love the gaffer. I love the staff. I love this place.

“Obviously, we will have to see what happens.

“I won’t know too much until I go back to West Ham.

“We will see what happens there.”

Whether Downes stays at Southampton could be affected by whether they can win promotion back to the Premier League through the playoffs.
