Newcastle United have not gone beyond ‘looking at possible targets’ in the event the Marc Guehi deal does not happen, according to the Daily Telegraph.

Eddie Howe has made clear the need for another centre-back to arrive before the transfer window closes on Friday night.

The Magpies have been working hard to try to sign Guehi from Crystal Palace, but amid multiple offers having been rejected by the Eagles it is not clear whether they will end up getting their man.

Other centre-backs, such as RB Leipzig’s Mohamed Simakan, have been linked with Newcastle as Guehi alternatives.

The club though have not gone beyond looking at alternatives, even with the clock ticking down on the transfer window.

It does not appear that Newcastle are working on deals for alternatives to the Crystal Palace man.

If Newcastle cannot manage to get a deal for Guehi over the line, that could leave them at risk of finishing the summer without another centre-back on the books.

Lloyd Kelly joined earlier this summer, but Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles remain out of action with long term injuries.
