Manchester United legend Teddy Sheringham believes that if Gareth Southgate gets the Red Devils job, he would surprise people.

The Red Devils have made a poor start to their campaign as they have lost two of their opening three league matches.

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag’s future at Old Trafford is under the microscope and some names have come up to replace the Dutchman.

Former England boss Southgate’s name has been prominent as a possible replacement for Ten Hag, but some Red Devils fans were opposed to that when the Dutchman’s job was under threat at the end of the last season.

Sheringham is of the view a potential Southgate appointment could help Manchester United set the standards right on the pitch and he believes that despite Southgate’s playing style he would surprise people.

“You know, people even spoke about him getting the Manchester United job, and then they’ve come out openly and said no way do they want Gareth Southgate”, Sheringham said at the launch of Ladbrokes’ “Gaffer of all Accas” when he asked about the former England boss.

“Let me tell you: you could do a lot worse than getting Gareth Southgate in charge.

“He would get those standards right on the pitch, and I think he’d surprise a few at Man United.

“They’re looking at the style of football that has been played under him, and I understand it hasn’t been as great as what it perhaps could’ve been.”

Ten Hag will be looking to get back to winning ways if he wants to keep his job at Old Trafford after the international break when his side face Southampton away.
