Inter are bidding to make use of the financial firepower provided by the takeover of the club by businessman Erick Thohir by moving for Ezequiel Garay.

The Argentine defender recently declared himself happy at current club Benfica, but Inter have identified the former Real Madrid centre-back as a potential January acquisition.

According to Correio da Manha, the Nerazzurri are plotting a move for Garay which could see as much as €20m splashed to capture the stopper.

Inter may not have things all their own way however as Garay is a long-term Manchester United target, while he has also attracted eyes from other clubs, including Barcelona.

Nevertheless, the Italian giants are keen to make a splash in January and announce their return to the top table.

It remains to be seen if Benfica will part with Garay in the new year, but a €20m bid would undoubtedly tempt the Portuguese side.
