Former Real Madrid and Liverpool striker Fernando Morientes believes there is "no doubt" that Cristiano Ronaldo should win this year's FIFA Ballon d'Or.

Ronaldo appears to be in a two-way battle for the accolade with Bayern Munich winger Franck Ribery, with Lionel Messi having dipped to third in the betting.

The Ballon d'Or will be handed out at a FIFA gala on 13th January and Morientes feels that Ronaldo should be crowned as the world's best player at the event.

Morientes told Spanish Europa Press: "For me and for many people there is no doubt that Cristiano deserves the Ballon d'Or.

"He is a special player who has had an exceptional calendar year, not only in terms of goals but in terms of numbers in every way.

"Cristiano can be, at the moment, the best player in the world without any problem."

Morientes, who retired from the game in 2010, has been working as a coach with Real Madrid's youngsters.
