Former Bayer Leverkusen and Blackburn Rovers midfielder Jermaine Jones will be a free agent next summer after Schalke agreed to let him leave.

United States international Jones has been at Schalke since 2007 and was looking for a change in circumstances.

Jones spent half a season on loan at Ewood Park from Schalke, while he started his career at Eintracht Frankfurt.

The 32-year-old's game time at Schalke has been slowly reducing over the years and an honest conversation with sporting director Horst Heldt has given him the chance to leave in the summer window.

"Jermaine and I talked on the phone over the holidays", Heldt told the club website. "And I told him that we will not extend the contract expiring in the summer.

"There were some prospects for Jones, but Schalke have not yet received a concrete offer. But the transfer phase has only just begun."

Jones made 15 Premier League appearances for Blackburn during the second half of the 2010/2011 season.
