Blaszczykowski suffered damage to his anterior cruciate ligament in Dortmund's first Bundesliga game of 2014 against Augsburg on Saturday.

The initial expectations were of Blaszczykowski staying out for between six and nine months, though Dortmund are hoping to have him back by the summer.

A club statement read: "Blaszczykowski’s injury was confirmed following a scan at the Knappschaft Hospital in Dortmund on Sunday. The Poland international will undergo surgery in the next few days.

"With a successful recovery, Blaszczykowski could return to training after the summer break, according to BVB team doctor Markus Braun."

The 28-year-old winger, who has spent more than six years with Dortmund, also remains quietly confident on his recovery.

He told the club website: "I'm not knocked off-course easily. I will try everything I can to return stronger than ever!"
