Borussia Monchengladbach have confirmed that out-of-favour striker Luuk de Jong is heading to Newcastle United to undergo a medical.

De Jong has been a fringe player at Borussia-Park this season, failing to start a single Bundesliga game and being restricted to substitute appearances.

He lashed out at coach Lucien Favre recently, claiming the Gladbach boss does not bother to talk to him.

Gladbach announced: "Luuk de Jong does not train with the eleven foals [Gladbach nickhname, ed.] today.

"The striker is on his way to Newcastle for a medical."

For De Jong, the journey to Newcastle will have been a long one.

First wanted by the Magpies in the summer of 2012, after much consideration he decided his career would be better served in the Bundesliga and joined Gladbach from FC Twente.
