Juan Mata has struck a delighted note after making his debut for Manchester United against Cardiff City at Old Trafford.

Manchester United boss David Moyes handed the club's new record signing a starting spot against the Welsh side and was not disappointed as Mata produced an energetic performance with more than a few classy touches.

Robin van Persie marked his return from injury with a goal after six minutes, while Ashley Young scored in the second half to help the hosts win 2-0.

And Mata cut a very happy figure post-match when assessing his first game in a Manchester United shirt, something which was capped off by being handed the Man of the Match award.

"We had chances to score more than two. The win was very important for the team", he told the BBC.

"It was very exciting for me. The fans are unbelievable.

"The lads welcomed me very well."

Now the former Chelsea player is aiming to help Manchester United to climb back into the top four.

"We will try until the end [to finish in the top four]. We will never give up."
