As expected, Newcastle United are pushing ahead with a move for Lyon midfielder Clement Grenier as they look to replace Paris Saint-Germain bound Yohan Cabaye.

The Magpies wasted little time in putting in a bid for Grenier, with €13m submitted to Lyon on Monday. However, now that bid is being reported in England, as Newcastle step up their chase.

Cabaye is in Paris to tie up the loose ends surrounding his switch to PSG and Newcastle are looking to instantly react.

They are already closing in on Borussia Monchengladbach striker Luuk de Jong, who has been given permission by the Bundesliga club to travel to England for talks and a medical.

He could be joined by Grenier, although Lyon are likely to drive a hard bargain over the midfielder.

Les Gones do have a financial need to sell players, but coach Remi Garde does not want to lose the midfielder's services midway through the season.

And president Jean-Michel Aulas has vowed to strengthen the team, rather than weaken it, something which would not tally with selling Grenier.

Newcastle are still trying to tempt the Ligue 1 club into selling however, though they may need to do better than their initial €13m bid.
