Queens Park Rangers manager Harry Redknapp has moved in for Marseille right-back Rod Fanni, having maintained the need to strengthen defensively.

Redknapp expressed the hope to sign a defender in his last press conference – with a striker already a priority.

And according to L'Equipe, QPR have offered Marseille the chance to send Fanni out on loan this month.

Fanni, once a Stoke City target, has been at Marseille for just over three years now, and is contracted until 2015.

The 32-year-old, who has previously turned out for Lens, Nice and Rennes, has found himself short on game time this season thanks an injury last year.

Redknapp is already understood to have lost out on strike targets Paul-Georges Ntep and Ishak Belfodil.

It makes landing at least one major signing this winter window that much more essential for QPR, who are aiming for promotion.

They have struggled through a few injuries, and, as a result, have dropped to eight points behind Championship leaders Leicester City.
