Manchester United defender Phil Jones has insisted that injuries can be no excuse for poor performances and believes that they need to maintain their winning run in order to turn things around.

The Red Devils have been on the receiving end of a string of disappointing results and are desperately trying to reach a top four Premier League spot to qualify for the Champions League.

The return of star duo of Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney, along with new signing Juan Mata, helped to lift spirits as they managed to overpower Premier League strugglers Cardiff City with a 2-0 scoreline on Tuesday.

Even though Jones concedes that missing players of that stature can be a problem, he also feels that it can never be an excuse.

"It is no excuse. When you do miss players of that stature you need to find it elsewhere. I think we have done it in certain areas but not in the areas we would like. We are just delighted to get them back and firing again", Jones told his club's offical website.

The youngster added that the team need to maintain their winning momentum without thinking too much about the ultimate goal.

"It is a game-by-game situation now", the 21-year-old added.

"All we can afford to do is look at Saturday at Stoke. We need to go there and win.

"Then we need to follow that up. We need to maintain a run."
