Federico Macheda has left Manchester United to join Birmingham City on loan until the end of the season.

The Italian striker spent time on loan at Doncaster Rovers earlier this term and will now sample Championship football once again.

Macheda's agent had ruled out an exit for his client in this window recently, but that has quickly changed, with the Red Devils allowing a departure.

The striker could leave Manchester United permanently in the summer, with his agent pointing to a free transfer.

"It is true that some Italian clubs enquired, but nothing was there and he must move on a free transfer in June", Giovanni Bia said.

"He will look for a serious project and at least a three-year contract."
