Diego marked his Atletico Madrid return in perfect fashion last night and then quickly declared himself ready to take on the Real Madrid test in the cup.

The 28-year-old, who spent the 2011/12 season on loan at the Vicente Calderon, swapped Wolfsburg for Atletico on deadline day.

His debut in La Liga this season saw him score the final goal of Atletico Madrid's 4-0 win over Real Sociedad yesterday, which took them three points clear atop the table.

And for Diego, who helped Los Rojiblancos to the Europa League title during his previous stint, the return had been a long time coming, even if it came amid the sad news of Luis Aragones' death.

"I prepared a lot for this moment", he was quoted on the club website as saying. "I left Atletico, but Atletico never left my heart.

"Whenever possible I saw the matches, because I have a special affection for this club. I hoped to start well, but winning as we win and scoring is wonderful, I'm very happy about that.

"We must stay focused on the next match, and Real Madrid come in the cup, we start preparing tomorrow we will begin to prepare for the meeting.
