Manchester United are aware that a Champions League place is the minimum requirement for the club this season, defender Chris Smalling has revealed.

From winning the Premier League comfortably last season, there are now real doubts over whether the Red Devils can book a spot in Europe's top tier competition for 2014/15.

Those only increased at the weekend as David Moyes' men suffered their eighth league defeat of the season when going down 2-1 away at Stoke City.

And Smalling insists that everyone at Old Trafford knows what is expected.

"We don't really talk [about the Champions League] but we all know if anything that's the minimum we need to aim for", he told his club's site.

"If we can get on a good run, we've got the players – obviously we lost a couple on Saturday [in Phil Jones and Jonny Evans], but we've got a week now until we next play so hopefully we can patch them up and get as many bodies out there as we can."

Manchester United are currently seven points behind fourth-placed Liverpool in the standings, a side they still have to play at Old Trafford on 16th March.
