Clement Grenier admits that an approach from Newcastle United last month was "flattering", even if he decided to stay put at Lyon.

Newcastle moved to try to sign the 23-year-old after selling Yohan Cabaye to Paris Saint-Germain. But the Magpies were met with a club that refused to sell and a player who did not want to go.

It all ended in disappointment, but Grenier is nevertheless happy that he is attracting admiring glances from clubs such as Newcastle and wants it to continue.

"Of course, it's always flattering to know that big clubs are interested in you", he told Eurosport.

"After all, you don't want it to stop.

"The important thing is to be consistent on the pitch in order to attract their attention.

"But for me, Lyon have always been a big European club.

"The consistency is there, even if there have been changes in status compared to some other clubs in the league."

Lyon currently sit sixth in Ligue 1 and face a battle to climb into the top three to qualify for next season's Champions League.
