Paolo Cannavaro insists he is focussed on getting Sassuolo out of the Serie A danger zone, but admitted he had been close to joining Inter Milan last season.

Cannavaro is understood to have been keen on a reunion with his former Napoli manager Walter Mazzarri at the San Siro.

He joined Sassuolo on loan from Napoli last month, but was tipped for a move away to Inter at the same time as well.

Last summer, Manchester City had become linked with the 32-year-old, though his agent had played the claims down.

However, Cannavaro himself confirmed some of last year's speculation on Inter, telling Sky Italia: "In January, there was no contact, but there was something last August.

"The relationship with Mazzarri is exceptional."

Cannavaro's exit from Napoli had been shrouded in controversy as he reportedly blamed the club for forcing him out.

He is much more placid about that today, adding: "I'd rather not talk about [Napoli], but I never said a word out of place.

"The relationship with the group was perfect, but now I'm concentrating here on Sassuolo."
