Tottenham Hotspur manager Tim Sherwood believes that Liverpool are now his club's main rivals for a top four spot.

Liverpool thrashed Arsenal 5-1 at Anfield at the weekend to consolidate their hold on fourth place, moving to 50 points from 25 games.

Spurs meanwhile leapfrogged Everton into fifth after eking out a 1-0 win over the Toffees.

However, Sherwood's men are still three points behind Liverpool and the former Blackburn midfielder believes Brendan Rodgers' squad are Spurs' main competition, especially due to their current form.

"There's always someone who could drop a couple of points but our big rivals Liverpool are flying", he was quoted as saying by the BBC.

"We need them to trip up."

And the 45-year-old feels that if Spurs can win nine of their remaining 13 games this season, that could be enough to secure a top four spot and bring Champions League football back to White Hart Lane.

"Maths isn't my strong point, but I would say you can afford to lose another four or five games out of what we have got left."

Tottenham are next in Premier League action tomorrow when they travel to Newcastle, while Liverpool head to the capital to play bottom side Fulham.
