The foot injury has taken away almost all of his season so far, but the surgery has gone well and Milan can now look forward to him taking the San Siro stage.

The rehab stage is understood to last until the end of February and El Shaarawy will resume training and game time in early April.

Milan have kept faith with the 21-year-old during the recovery period, even amid much transfer speculation.

Liverpool-linked El Shaarawy today revealed he had been subject to a lucrative offer from Russia, but rejected it.

"I have never felt excluded from the project," he said. "I have a great desire to return to play and do well.

"There was so much anger and pain because I had never before been out for so long. But do not think I'm gone."
