Fulham goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg was left with the ugly side of a Luis Suarez collision yesterday, though Rene Meulensteen is yet to discover the full extent of the injury.

Stekelenburg picked up a black eye after meeting with Suarez's outstretched boot during last night's defeat to Liverpool.

The Dutchman, Suarez's former teammate at Ajax, had to be substituted on 76 minutes and Meulensteen later confirmed there would be further scans.

"He got the boot right in his eye so it’s swollen up straight away," Meulensteen was quoted by his club website as saying.

"How bad the damage is, we have to assess. But it was that big that he couldn’t carry on. He’s fine but it’s a big swollen black eye."

Stekelenburg's exit almost proved the decisive factor for Fulham, who saw substitute David Stockdale fail to keep out Steven Gerrard's match-winning penalty in stoppage time.

The Reds had to twice fight back from a goal down, with Gerrard converting from the spot after Daniel Sturridge was fouled in the box.
