England boss Roy Hodgson has a 'nasty side to him', assistant manager Ray Lewington has revealed.

Three Lions squad members have often been vocal about how nice it is to work with the 66-year-old. But Lewington, who has been in close contact with the boss since his Fulham days, says that players are never spared a dressing down if they fall out of line.

"What you see is what you get with Roy, but people will be surprised to hear he has a nasty side to him too", Lewington told Crystal Palace's official website.

"You ask some of the members of the Fulham squad. They know about it.

"He can be difficult to work for sometimes because he demands that everyone does their best. He has high standards. He is a very articulate, charming man. He does the job as he sees it and everyone has to get to that degree of excellence.

"If you don't, he tells you. He is what you see but he has also got that other side you don't see."

Lewington will be assisting the veteran manager during the national team's World Cup campaign in Brazil this June and he along with Hodgson will be expecting and much-improved performance from England from their last World Cup outing in 2010.

England's World Cup campaign kickstarts on 14th June against Italy followed by a match against Uruguay on 19th. They round off their group by facing Costa Rica on 24th.
