Former Manchester City player Danny Mills insists that the club need to spend big money on a world-class defender, if they hope to stand a chance at the top level in Europe.

The Citizens were knocked out of the Champions League after losing by an aggregate score of 4-1 to Barcelona, partly due to defensive errors by Martin Demichelis and Joleon Lescott.

"Everyone City player is top drawer apart from the centre-half that plays alongside Vincent Kompany", Mills said to the BBC.

"They have all the money in the world but have not bought the right player."

Demichelis, who was brought over to the Etihad Stadium from Malaga for £4.2m, conceded a penalty and was sent off in the first-leg, while Lescott, who cost £22m, was plagued by errors in the second.

"City should have gone out and spent £20m on a quality centre-half, not the £4m they spent on Martin Demichelis”, the Englishman added.

"You need to pay for quality. They should have spent big, they knew they had big important games coming up but they did not address it.

"City have done well but Martin Demichelis cost them in the first match and tonight it was Joleon Lescott. They are just not good enough at this level and City need to address that in the summer.

"They are just not Champions League players. Lescott was lucky in the first half and he always has a mistake in him."

Demichelis had also conceded a penalty in the FA Cup quarter-final, which saw Manchester City lose to Wigan Athletic 2-1 and knocked out of the tournament.
