Toronto FC striker Jermain Defoe was delighted with his team’s performance as the Reds beat Seattle Sounders 2-1 on Saturday, along with the reception he has received.

Defoe, who joined the Canadian club in January this year from Tottenham, netted the ball in the 7th minute before he doubled the lead seven minutes later, to score twice on his Major League Soccer debut.

The former Tottenham player got just around half a month to train with his new club, since he was loaned back to White Hart Lane until February's end, but the 31-year-old got in the groove with the team to produce a stellar performance.

“All the boys have been fantastic”, Defoe told FIFA’s site.

“The team spirit is really good. When you have to dig in towards the end, like when [Seattle Sounders] scored a goal and put us under a lot of pressure, we all stuck together. Everyone worked hard for one another and we showed great character.”

The English international also heaped praise on boss Ryan Nelsen and said that his former Tottenham team-mate is the best manager the club could get.

“Ryan is really organised”, Defoe said.

“Even when he was at Tottenham you always knew that he would go on to be a manager. He’s just a natural leader.

“He’s going to do well because he’s been there and he’s done it. A lot of managers haven’t played at the top level, but Ryan has. He’s someone who knows the game inside and out. He’s the perfect manager for this club.”
