Brendan Rodgers wants Liverpool to iron out their defensive mistakes, ahead of his side’s Premier League clash against Sunderland at Anfield on Wednesday.

The Reds, who defeated Cardiff City 6-3 at the weekend, are currently second in the league standings with 65 points from 30 games.

However, despite being a good attacking unit against the Bluebirds, Liverpool’s defence looked shaky at the Cardiff City Stadium.

And Rodgers, who admitted that his side are “far from being perfect”, explained that the Merseyside giants are still a work-in-progress.

But the manager remains optimistic about Liverpool still managing to pick up points in spite of being on a learning curve.

"We're far from being perfect", Rodgers told his club’s official site.

"I think Saturday showed that. In the first half, we were still a threat going forward, but some of our positioning defensively wasn't so good.

"What we've been able to work on here is the amount of mistakes that we do make in games, but we still have a real positive attitude in the game and an optimistic view to win the game.

“And that's something that has shone through over the course of my time here.

"We're nowhere near the finished article, but whilst we're learning and whilst we're improving, we'll hopefully continue to pick up the points and see where it takes us."

Liverpool defeated Sunderland 3-1 in the corresponding fixture at the Stadium of Light in September with Luis Suarez scoring a brace and Daniel Sturridge netting the other goal.
