Brendan Rodgers has admitted to being pleased by his side's 2-1 win over Sunderland at Anfield this evening, even if he is not yet satisfied with their current Premier League placing.

Liverpool were made to work for their three points, the Black Cats putting men behind the ball and looking to frustrate Rodgers' men.

It needed a superbly struck free-kick from Steven Gerrard to put Liverpool ahead in the 39th minute, while Daniel Sturridge then curled home a shot just after the break to put the side 2-0 up.

Sunderland did pull one back and subjected Liverpool to some nervy moments, which Rodgers was pleased to see his team deal with.

"Certainly, a win like that good teams dig out", he told Sky Sports.

"Being 2-0 up with a lovely little spell after that, when we looked like we could get one or two more.

"But what good teams do is they stay with it. Sunderland threw everything at it in that last period, but we stayed in there."

Asked whether he is pleased that Liverpool are now second and just one point behind Chelsea in the Premier League, Rodgers replied: "We're always looking to be at the top. But we can't complain."
