Former Manchester United captain and current club ambassador Bryan Robson has insisted European qualification is very important for the club even if it is Europa League football. The way this season has progressed, the only way Manchester United could feature in next season’s Champions League is by winning the current edition.

There has been plenty of debate on the question of playing the Europa League and whether it would be detrimental for the Red Devils’ push for a top four position or the league title next season.

Robson is not ready to disregard the Europa League and insists that Manchester United should try secure qualification by finishing in the top six this season.

"In my opinion, people are completely wrong to dismiss the Europa League", said Robson, in his club ambassador's column in United Review.

Robson stressed that Manchester United are used to playing in European competition every season and next season should be no different. Manchester United were the flag-bearers of English football in the European Cup in 1956.

"When you have been used to playing in Europe every year for such a long time, you get into that habit and always want to be competing in it, in any format.

“The club has been used to European football in most seasons, ever since the Sir Matt Busby days, and, certainly over the last 26 years of Sir Alex Ferguson’s reign, the fans have been accustomed to having European nights.”

Manchester United were the first English club to participate in the European Cup in 1956 and the first English club to win the European Cup in 1968.
