Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Allan Nielsen is being added to the coaching staff at his old club, joining former Spurs team-mates Tim Sherwood, Les Ferdinand and Steffen Freund.

Nielsen has been handed a technical role in Sherwood's backroom staff at White Hart Lane and is currently in London to ink his contract, something which has left him delighted.

"I was over there in November and spoke about it, among other things, with Tim when he trained the Under-21s", the Dane told Bold.

"He has done well over there and mastered all the youth ranks and he thought it was funny that both Les Ferdinand and Steffen Freund were there. So we talked about it and I was also interested.

"And in football things can go quickly. All of a sudden he takes over the manager role.

"And, not at first, but as a second thing, he thought of me. So we three midfielders are there and then Les Ferdinand.

"Ferdinand does the attacking part, finishing and stuff, and I do the technical, including penetrating runs, deep into the penalty area, because that's lacking a bit.

"I did not think about it twice. It's an exciting challenge."

The 43-year-old played for Tottenham between 1996 and 2000, helping the north London giants to the 1999 League Cup.

At international level Nielsen won 44 caps for Denmark, scoring seven goals.

He will link up with with old team-mate Sherwood at a time when the former midfielder is under immense pressure, with Spurs all but certain to finish outside the Premier League top four this season.
