Glen Johnson has backed Liverpool team-mate Raheem Sterling to earn a spot in Roy Hodgson's England squad for this summer's World Cup.

Sterling has shone for Liverpool during their Premier League title challenge and Johnson is sure that the young winger has caught the eye of Hodgson.

"It's all kind of coming together at the right time for him", Johnson explained to Liverpool's official site.

"If he keeps playing the way he is, he's definitely got a chance to be involved in the summer", the defender added.

Johnson also revealed he does not expect Sterling to suffer his fate in the England squad, where he did not have a consistent run in the England team.

"I made my debut around a similar age as Raheem, but obviously I had a few years where I was in and out – so I didn't get as many caps as maybe I should have by now", he said.

"But hopefully Raheem won't have that gap and I'm sure he'll go on and get more."

Sterling has made 27 appearances for Liverpool so far this season, scoring six goals from 26 shots on target.
