Steven Gerrard has saluted Lucas Leiva for his performance for Liverpool in the side's 2-1 win over West Ham today.

Gerrard scored both Liverpool's goals in the victory at Upton Park, clinching three points for the Reds which sent them back to the top of the Premier League table.

And the Reds' skipper had warm words for Lucas, who he felt made a vital contribution to the win when being brought on at half-time in place of Philippe Coutinho.

"What summed it up was Lucas Leiva", Gerrard told Sky Sports.

"He hasn't been in the picture for a while, he comes in, controls the game and gave a fantastic performance", Gerrard added.

Liverpool now sit back at the Premier League's summit with 74 points from 33 games, two points ahead of second-placed Chelsea and four ahead of third-placed Manchester City.

Next weekend Manchester City visit Anfield in what is a crunch clash.
