Ex-Liverpool captain Ronnie Whelan has backed his former team to win the Premier League this season and believes that the Reds have shown more energy in the run-in than title rivals Manchester City and Chelsea.

Liverpool who lead the Premier League table with 74 points, have five games left to play, including a game against third-placed Manchester City at Anfield this Sunday.

The former Republic of Ireland international believes that the Reds have the momentum with them, which is crucial in the last few games of the season.

"The energy they are showing at the end of the season always gives you a chance in the last five games”, the 52-year-old was quoted as saying by ITV.

Whelan believes that the energy that the current Liverpool squad have displayed in the last few games is keeping them ahead of the chasing pack.

"The energy seems to be more than Chelsea and Manchester City and the other teams.”

Whelan was the captain of the Liverpool team that won the FA Cup in 1989 and was also part of the last league title winning squad of the Reds in 1990.
