Manchester United defender Chris Smalling admits that the position that the Red Devils are in this season has brought about a strange feeling for most of the players in the squad.

Since joining Manchester United in 2010, the England defender has won two Premier League titles, so he accepts that this season’s failures feel different and strange to him and for a number of his team-mates.

"It's a strange feeling for a lot of us to be in the position that we find ourselves in", the 24-year-old told the club’s official site.

"Even before I joined, and since I've been here, we've always been competing at the top of the league.”

The former Fulham defender believes that the inconsistency that they have shown in the league this season has brought about their downfall.

"Whenever we've made progress this season, we've not followed it up in the next two or three games, which has been disappointing.

“That has hurt us. I know how much the fans are hurting and we're hurting as well.”

The last time Liverpool and Manchester City made up the top two of England’s top division was in the 1976/77 season. Manchester United finished sixth in the league that season.
