The race for Hamburg starlet Hakan Calhanoglu is heating up, with Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers and Manchester City chief scout Gary Worthington having taken in the attacking midfielder's performance against Bayer Leverkusen.

The Bundesliga clash took place at the start of this month and saw relegation-threatened Hamburg run out 2-1 winners, Calhanoglu scoring the first goal of the game.

The young midfielder recently penned a contract extension which runs until 2018, but that has not put off his many suitors.

According to German daily Bild, five clubs are currently serious about Calhanoglu. They are: Chelsea, Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool and Atletico Madrid.

Scouts were packed into the stands at Hamburg to watch Calhanoglu against Leverkusen, with the most notable being Manchester City's chief scout.

Also in attendance was Rodgers, the Liverpool manager now actively planning his club's summer reinforcements with a Champions League campaign on the horizon.

And the presence of Rodgers in person suggests the Reds' interest is extremely serious.

Calhanoglu was on target again at the weekend, scoring in Hamburg's 2-1 defeat at Hannover.
