Bayern Munich midfielder Javi Martinez believes that the German champions need to watch out for Real Madrid’s counter-attacking threats in the semi-final of the Champions League.

Bayern Munich have travelled to the Spanish capital to take on Real Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final at the Santiago Bernabeu tonight.

Martinez believes that it is very important for the Bavarians to close down the spaces and stop Los Blancos from launching fast counter-attacks.

"We must control Madrid's counterattacks; they're very fast on the break. They have some very quick players who can get forward at pace and score – that's what we need to watch out for”, the 25-year-old told UEFA’s official site.

The Spaniard believes that this Real Madrid team have plenty of attacking threats and if Bayern Munich are not careful they will pay the price.

This Madrid team is more attacking as they have the players to play that way, so we have to be very careful."

Both Real Madrid and Bayern Munich are looking to make history in this year’s Champions League. The Bavarians are looking to become the first team in the modern era to defend the Champions League and Los Blancos are looking to win their tenth European Cup, a landmark in European football.
