Former Liverpool striker Michael Owen believes that the club have undergone an amazing transformation from last season and has credited manager Brendan Rodgers for doing an "outstanding job."

The Reds are currently placed at the top of the Premier League table with 80 points, leading Jose Mourinho's Chelsea by five points.

The situation is in stark contrast to the previous season, when they ended in a disappointing seventh position with 61 points.

Owen, who turned out for Liverpool's first team from 1996 to 2004, feels that Rodgers has done a great job with the squad having lifted them up to where they are at present.

"It is amazing the transformation from last season", the 34-year-old was quoted as saying by ITV.

"From seventh last season Brendan Rodgers has done an outstanding job.

"I don't think many teams will come from seventh to win it, certainly in such a competitive league as the Premier League.

"Huge credit to him and the rest of the team, which has some outstanding players but have been guided superbly by the manager."

Liverpool play Chelsea at the weekend, a match that could well have the potential to decide the fate of the league title this season.
