Manchester United face opposition if they decide to move to appoint Louis van Gaal as their new manager, with wealthy Ligue 1 outfit Monaco also looking at the Dutchman.

There is consistent speculation over the future of current Monaco coach Claudio Ranieri, despite the club sitting second in the French top flight.

The club's owner is believed to feel Ranieri could have done better with the players at his disposal and alternatives are being looked at, with Zinedine Zidane even mooted as a contender.

According to French magazine Le 10 Sport, Van Gaal is also on Monaco's wanted list, with the Dutchman's experience and availability after the World Cup attracting the principality club.

One thing in Manchester United's favour however is that Van Gaal has confirmed his desire to work in the English Premier League next season.

Monaco though will be able to offer Van Gaal the chance to manage in the Champions League, something Manchester United cannot match on account of being out of the reckoning to finish in the Premier League's top four this term.

The Ligue 1 side also have no aversion to splashing the cash and would be likely to hand the Holland coach a big transfer kitty.
