Former Liverpool winger Luis Garcia has heaped praise on Reds’ skipper Steven Gerrard and has said that the midfielder deserves to win the Premier League title.

Brendan Rodgers’ side are currently leading the league table and command a five-point advantage over second-placed Chelsea, whom they face in a top-of-the-table encounter on Sunday, as they look close to winning the English top flight for the first time in 24 years.

But Garcia, who played for the Anfield outfit for three years from 2004, winning the Champions League and FA Cup during his time there, had nothing but good words about his former team-mate, insisting that Gerrard is one of the best footballers in the history of the game and every bit worthy of the English title.

“You can see what this means to Steven with his performances on the pitch”, the former Spanish international was quoted as saying by Liverpool’s site.

“He's in the last few years of his career and he knows there aren't many chances left for him to win the Premier League.

“Now he's got the chance right there and he deserves it. He has been one of the best players in the history of football, not just in terms of Liverpool”, the 35-year-old continued.

“It's amazing to think how important he was to Liverpool when we won the Champions League and how important he still is all these years on.

“He's a player every club would love to have in their team and he deserves this kind of title."

Gerrard has scored 13 goals and has 11 assists in 31 league appearances this season, and will be looking forward to carrying on his momentum when his side take on Crystal Palace and Newcastle United after the Blues over the remaining weeks.
