Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers believes that Tottenham Hotspur were expected to challenge for the Premier League title this season due to their summer transfer spending.

Spurs sold Gareth Bale to Real Madrid for a world-record transfer fee of around £85m last summer, reinvesting the entire total and more on bringing in a number of new players.

Tottenham have struggled though, sacking Andre Villas-Boas as manager in December and slotting Tim Sherwood in as boss.

Sitting sixth in the Premier League, Spurs are unlikely to finish in the top four and qualify for the Champions League. For Rodgers, that is well short of expectations, with the Liverpool manager believing with the total Spurs lavished a title challenge was demanded.

Explaining the pressure in the title race is on Chelsea and Manchester City and not Liverpool, Rodgers also passed judgement on Spurs.

"I think the pressure is if you are Manchester City or Chelsea and you spend that money you expect to win the league", he told a press conference.

"Look at Tottenham.

"If you spend over £100m you expect to be challenging for the league."
