Massimiliano Allegri is still a strong contender to take over at Tottenham Hotspur in a move which would mean technical director Franco Baldini remaining at White Hart Lane.

Baldini has been edging closer to the exit door at Tottenham after being blamed for the club's poor use of over £100m of transfer funds in the summer, Tim Sherwood, who succeeded Andre Villas-Boas as boss in December having been clear on his view of several of the new arrivals.

Spurs are aiming to replace Sherwood however and have contacted Ajax coach Frank de Boer over taking charge next term. De Boer has promised to speak to Tottenham following the conclusion of the Eredivisie at the weekend.

But according to Italian outlet Tutto Mercato, De Boer is not the only candidate in the running, with former AC Milan tactician Allegri currently in pole position.

And if Allegri took over at White Hart Lane, he would be in favour Baldini staying, with the former Roma sporting director seeing his position confirmed and boosted by an important ally at White Hart Lane.

Allegri departed Milan earlier this season following a lacklustre campaign for the Rossoneri.

The coach, who led the club to the Serie A title in the 2010/11 season, had seen a number of experienced players depart and also had to wrestle with budget cuts.
