Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed that Andros Townsend will be out of action for the next ten weeks, something which means he will play no part in the World Cup.

The England international picked up an injury during his side's 1-0 win at Stoke City at the weekend, something which required an MRI scan this week.

It has been confirmed that the winger has damaged ligaments in his ankle and will undergo surgery tomorrow.

Townsend will be out of action for around ten weeks.

The news is a blow to England boss Roy Hodgson, who had seen the Tottenham man make a major impact for the Three Lions this season, playing a pivotal role in helping the country book a World Cup spot.

It will also come as a huge disappointment to Townsend, who has won five caps for England so far, with one goal.
