Manchester United legend Paul Scholes is convinced that Liverpool can challenge for the Premier League title again next season, if they can sign two world-class centre-backs and a left-back.

Scholes watched on in admiration as Liverpool went close to winning the Premier League last season, finally coming up short on the last day of the season as Manchester City took the crown.

Liverpool were criticised for their leaky defence, which was propped up by a lethal strikeforce, which saw both Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez score over 20 goals in the Premier League.

Scholes was impressed, but the former Manchester United star feels Liverpool need to invest in their backline to challenge again.

"Defensively Liverpool were poor – conceding 50 goals – but they can be contenders again next year IF they can get two world-class centre halves and a left-back", Scholes wrote on his Paddy Power blog.

"I’m talking about players of the standard of Jaap Stam and Rio Ferdinand. That quality is difficult to find", the ex-England international added.

Scholes does though feel England can learn something from Liverpool to make use of in this summer's World Cup.

"South Africa in 2010 was so negative with boring draws. Nothing seemed to happen. England fans, and myself as an England fan, would rather 3-all games than dull, nil-nil draws. I’d love to see Roy be brave enough to play like Liverpool."
