Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has categorically stated that Javier Mascherano is not leaving club this summer.

The Argentine is believed to be upset at being played as a central defender and wants to return to his natural position in central midfield.

Mascherano has been strongly being linked with a move to Napoli this summer and it is believed that his former manager at Liverpool, Rafael Benitez, is keen to reunite with the 29-year-old.

The Barcelona president considers the Argentine a key player of the squad and has said that they have no plans to sell him.

“Mascherano is an important player on the pitch. He will remain in Barca,” Bartomeu told Mundo Deportivo.

With two years left on his contract, Mascherano will wait for the new Barcelona manager Luis Enrique to spell out his plans for him.
