Manchester United have been linked with a potential bid for Barcelona left-back Jordi Alba in the event they are unable to close a deal with Southampton for Luke Shaw.

The Red Devils have made a bid of £27m for Shaw, but negotiations with Southampton have stalled, with the Saints unwilling to make any decisions on their players until the installation of a new manager.

Manchester United remain confident of snapping up Shaw, however plans appear to be being made at Old Trafford in case the 18-year-old slips through their fingers.

According to Spanish outlet Fichajes, Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal is keen on Alba as an alternative signing.

The Spain international suffered an injury restricted season for Barcelona this term, managing just 15 appearances in La Liga.

Alba remains a key man at the Camp Nou though, but with Barcelona aiming to shake their squad up under new coach Luis Enrique, a hefty offer from Manchester United may yet find favour with the Catalan giants.

The 25-year-old, who joined Barcelona from Valencia in 2012, has a contract with the club until 2017.
