Former West Ham midfielder Joe Cole is heading to Aston Villa.

Cole was released by the Hammers at the end of this season having failed to carve out a regular spot in Sam Allardyce's side and being considered surplus to requirements at Upton Park.

However, the ex-England international is poised to remain in the Premier League with Aston Villa.

Cole is undergoing a medical with Villa this evening, according to BBC Radio 5 live, before putting pen to paper on a deal to move to Villa Park.

With money tight at Aston Villa, the club's boss Paul Lambert has been forced to dip into the free transfer market this summer.

He has already signed Switzerland centre-back Philippe Senderos, who had a spell with Valencia this season.
