Monaco have backed out of a deal to sign Victor Valdes on a free transfer this summer.

Valdes’ contract with Barcelona is set to expire at the end of this month and the Spaniard declared last year that he won’t be extending his stay at the Nou Camp.

It is believed Monaco had an agreement to sign Valdes this summer but it has emerged that the Ligue 1 side have decided to back out of the deal.

The Spaniard suffered a tear in his anterior cruciate ligament in March this year and was ruled out for the rest of the season, including the World Cup.

Concerns about Valdes’ injury status and the recent form of Danijel Subasic have made Monaco back-track from a deal which was agreed months ago, according to L’Equipe.

Monaco are interested in signing a back-up for Subasic and are not in the market anymore for a first-choice goalkeeper.

With Monaco shying away from signing Valdes, the field opens up for a number of Premier League clubs, including Liverpool and Manchester City who have, in the past, shown an interest in the Catalan shot-stopper.
